Congratulations to the latest class of STS Soldier Coaches who were certified in the Power Sports Performance Coaching Certification Seminar in July 2022! This group of curious and talented coaches engaged in some of the most cutting-edge information and application.
We kicked off the weeklong seminar hearing from our tremendous partner and sponsor, Wounded Warrior Project. Marc Hoffmeister welcomed us with an inspirational message about why service members and Veterans make great sports performance coaches. Marc spent over 30 years of service in the US Army and is now the National Adaptive Sports Director for WWP.
From there, we explored the essence of coaching and how to build a proper coaching foundation for success. This led to a formal exploration of what sports performance is and the ‘STRENGTH’ of strength and conditioning presented by Johannah Zabal, STS Sports Performance Director.
From this knowledge, we dove deep into the seven components of an exercise. We learned how best to analyze and teach techniques. CSM(Ret.) Rob Lively, President of TRX Elite shared with us his important and entertaining message of execution regardless of circumstance. This message was paramount as we assessed exercise techniques to best fit into our coaching practice irrespective of our access to resources. TRX Elite provides tremendous modalities to improve performance.
On the third day, we discussed sports nutrition to prepare and recover from competition according to an individual’s needs at the genetic level with dietician Carla Criste. Coach Criste spent 27 seasons as the Head Women’s Track and Field Coach at the US Naval Academy. We also learned the latest science on sleep and recovery from MAJ Allison Brager, Ph.D. After Allison’s eye-opening presentation, she answered dozens of questions relating to many of the class’s personal sleep concerns.
The final two days of this action-packed seminar were all about designing programs and periodization. The class had the opportunity to learn how to properly build a sports performance plan for a specific sport. Then we organized and designed workouts for an entire year, utilizing some of the best technology in sports performance. Everyone built programs on Microsoft Excel and then learned to use the Team Buildr software to manage, design, and monitor programs for multiple teams.
After successfully completing this Sports Performance Coaching Seminar, everyone is now better prepared to improve the performance of their athletes. Even if participants have already been coaching for decades, there was so much to learn. Soldiers To Sidelines is excited to see how our newest Soldier Coaches will use this newfound knowledge to improve their communities as a sports performance coach.
